Buffalo Museums
The Buffalo Museum of Science is a natural history museum, and their collections feature everything from zoology to anthropology. They also house one of the largest known Kodiak bear specimens, as well as the only North American Tibetan Sand Mandala. The Kellog Observatory is also located here.
Exhibiting works of art by Latin, Caribbean and African artists primarily, El Museo presents approximately 12 exhibitions every year. The museum also provides the community with a variety of programs and lectures by established artists.
Cofeld Judaic Museum of Temple Beth Zion is a world-renowned museum that houses over 1, 000 Judaic artifacts, some of which date back to the 10th century. A variety of paintings by well-known artists such as Marc Chagall are also displayed here. In addition, there are Holocaust remembrances here.
Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum is listed as a National Historic Site. It is a part of the world's largest privately-held collection of valueable and rare manuscripts. Among the items displayed or housed here are a description on the Theory of Relativity written by Einstein, an original draft of the US Bill of Rights, and a Thanksgiving Proclamation signed by George Washington.
The Buffalo Music Hall of Fame is dedicated to the musicians of Western New York and Buffalo. Inside, it houses numerous pieces of music memorabilia.
Buffalo Fire Historical Museum features a variety of pieces of equipment and other artifacts pertaining to firefighters, with some of these items dating back to the early 1800s. Among the items exhibited are a parade carriage from 1893, a hand pumper from 1831, and an exhibit celebrating the lives of lost firefighters.
The Iron Island Museum focuses on the history of the Lovejoy area of Buffalo. Among the displays here are photos featuring war veterans, artistic renderings of a variety of buildings, and numerous pieces of memorabilia.
Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame opened in 1990, but relocated to it's permanent home, the lower level of the HSBC Arena, in 1999. The Hall of Fame has over 100 inductees, and members of the Buffalo Bisons, Bills, and Sabres are among these. The Hall of Fame features audio and visual presentations, interactive exhibits, and a variety of sports memorabilia.
Neto Hatinakwe Onkwehowe is a Native arts and cultural center that was formed in 1992. Promoting education, cultural programs and initiatives, the center also presents exhibitions and interactive workshops, in an array of mediums, to visitors.
Burchfield-Penney Art Center is dedicated primarily to the work of Charles Burchfield, an American watercolourist who died in 1967. The collection of his work features close to 700 pieces. There is also a large collection of the works of a variety of western New York artists, which was donated by Charles Rand Penney Ph.D.
